Have You Got An App For That?
- Space-timers (location and time sensitive) Exchange of messages with relevance mostly for one specific location at one specific point in time such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Foursquare.
- Space-locators (only location sensitive) Exchange of messages, with relevance for one specific location, which is tagged to a certain place and read later by others such as Yelp, Tumblr, Blogger.
- Quick-timers (only time sensitive) Transfer of traditional social media applications to mobile devices to increase immediacy such as posting updates on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
- Slow-timers (neither location nor time sensitive) Transfer of traditional social media applications to mobile devices such as watching on Youtube or reading and editing a Wikipedia article.
Reflecting on the categories discussed by Andreas Kaplan shows how the consumer world has changed significantly. Information has now become quicker and easier to obtain. Thanks to the power of internet, to Google and in particular the advancement of mobile technology. Mobile consumers have also been the driving force for a lot of online contents and the creation of mobile apps that could resolve almost every consumer needs.
It is evident that the rise of mobile technology has transformed and will undeniably continue to affect our lives in ways we can’t think of.
Today, if we want something. There’s more likely an app for that; to ease idle moments, fill our tummy, track our health performance, be up to date with the world news, shop, pay bills, communicate with family and friends, book trips, find jobs and many more.
Here’s the list of the most popular apps of 2018 according to Mashable Australia.
Moving on. Can you imagine yourself without a mobile phone? If you'd ask me my answer is I can’t imagine going out without my phone. Because the arrival of internet enabled devices has simplified my life. Although it can also complicate things but that’s a different matter we won’t talk about today. So, let’s get moving.
Gone are the days when we have to bring a travel guide book or a stack of leaflets when travelling. We can easily get Trip Advisor or another App like Instagram to keep up to date to places where tourists go. And oh, Google Maps is also within our reach to make sure we don’t get lost.
Remember those days when mom and dad had to buy or rent CD’s and DVD’s to watch movies? These are almost gone. We have Netflix, Stan, Amazon Prime Video and Foxtel to name a few. How about those days when you had to que to pay your bills or hail a taxi to get you to somewhere and to stay a night or two? Not anymore. I’ve got an app for that. Gone are the days my cousins had to spend time putting together vacation photos on their scrapbooks or photo albums. Now, there’s IG, FB and Snapchat.
This is just to name a few; the popularity of apps only shows that there’s no way forward for brands but to go mobile to secure time starved consumers. Whilst the innovation of mobile devices has been good for consumers, it poses a mammoth challenge for brands. Marketing strategies have to be reimagined to adapt to the more empowered consumers who want the service or the product to be delivered NOW! or else they might have to choose for something else.
Here's a short video clip for you.😁
As we move forward to a more advanced technology like the rise of a more faster internet speed (5G). I believe it is also the best time for brands to advance the way they connect with digitally connected consumers and understand the factors that influence their behaviour.
That’s it for now folks. I’d appreciate if you could share how the advancement of mobile technology has changed your life. What do you see as the pros and cons?
Apps are integral for every daily need nowadays, I really dont think I could live without them! Especially something as simple as a Commonwealth cardless cash app, I dont even need my wallet!

True. Mobile apps made our lives simpler. We don't need to spend so much time searching for information we need. We can even use our mobile to pay our bills. So many pros but for sure there are lots of cons as well. Thanks for your comment.
DeleteI really enjoyed Kaplan's artcile and thought he raised a lot of good points, particulalry about how content needs to integrate with our everyday lives to be successful!
ReplyDeleteI agree with that. What he wrote more than 5 years ago is still relevant to this days.
DeleteI definitely agree. The advancement of technology has definitely impacted me. From spending all my time on the computer, it is now mostly on my smartphone. It's crazy that flagship smartphones are now the same/if not more expensive than laptops! Then again, convenience is priceless.
ReplyDeleteI think flagship smartphones are even more powerful.
DeleteAwesome read Grey! This is so true, I spend the majority of my time on the mobile nowadays whereas it used to be laptop or desktop!
ReplyDeleteSmart phones are now as powerful as desktop computers or laptops. Perhaps they are even more powerful.
DeleteThe advancement of mobile technology has definitely made my life easier, I call an uber instead of paying more for a taxi, order with uber eat, transfer my money through my bank app, use my fitness app at the gym, listen to spotify and so on. I don't think i could live without my phone, they are more powerful than never and have let us embrace all it could provide along like the use of aps created bu businesses to answer the need of saving time, doing specific things differently, more convenient and faster way to manage our tasks isn't it. But, even though it brings a lot of positive things, everyone is on their phone, people interact less with each other, everything is done through messaging, have you ever noticed friends at the restaurant, no one talking to each other, all being on their phone, that is sad actually. It changed the way we live, how we interact.
