Big Data, Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence: Redefining Our Lifestyle

The future of marketing is clear. It is smarter than what it was.

Over the past decade, the biggest game-changer so far in the world of Sales and Marketing has been the so-called Artificial Intelligence which is the direct result of Big Data and Internet of Things or IoT. So, let’s try to understand what these terms are.

    Big Data

    Internet of Things

    Artificial Intelligence (AI)

In essence, the technology of Internet of Things and Big Data is the collection of data about you and me such as but not limited to the time you sleep, walk, what food you eat, do you exercise, the programs you watch and brands you buy. These data are collected through internet-enabled devices like your smartphone, smartwatch, smart speaker, and smart shoes to name a few. The data collected are sent to different central locations through internet connectivity where they are analysed and transformed to become valuable information and this is where Artificial Intelligence comes in. From this intelligence, it is going to dictate choices that we make in life.

Perhaps the most popular example about how Big Data, Internet of Things relates to Artificial Intelligence are the contents or ads we never asked but we continuously see on our social media accounts. These contents are the direct result of personal details we provided when we created our social media account, the links we click, the contents we posted, like and share, what we searched, our interactions, the length of time we spent on the platform etc. Here’s a link you can click if you’re interested to know how AI works behind our smart devices. Be careful!

Positive Implications
Over the years, sensors have infiltrated every aspects of our lives; gathering information about us. Companies use the information to create products and offerings tailored to what you and me need. In a world full of information and complexities, these smart things we own today obviously made our life easier and simpler but for others, it made things a little bit more complicated especially for those who still enjoy the old ways.

With IoT and Big Data, organisations can track and form useful insights at real time to make informed decisions that will benefit the organisation from reducing human errors. Automating tasks is also a direct result of IoT and Big Data which is helping organisations ensure product quality and quantity.

IoT and Big Data also allows organisations to stay connected with consumers. Through their smart devices, organisations can also track every aspect of consumers daily lives. This is particularly beneficial in promoting new products, discounts and promotions that is tailored to a consumer’s need and previous dealings with brands which means consumers don’t need to search for information and think anymore; saving time, money and energy.

Negative Implications
Although these recent phenomena have been great for organisation and consumers, to this day, the challenges for marketers is mammoth in terms of privacy and security because each device that we use are powered by internet. These internet-enabled devices are susceptible to hacking and the risk of leakage of data and information cannot be ignored. Thus, sharing personal information is still a major drawback on why consumers are still resistant to the unprecedented advances in technology.

There is no doubt advances in technologies will continue to affect the way we live now as we are becoming  more highly dependent on these technologies.  Should we be scared or embrace it?

  1. What a legendary post!!! Great read! In my opinion i think the IoT has much more positive factors compared to the negative. Although the negatives like lack of privacy is there, i think the pros definitely outweigh the cons in this case. And all businesses should aim to utilize it and embrace this technology!

  5. Great blog post! it is true that today we are surrounded by IoT and big data. Marketers use our personal data to tailor ads specifically for us based on your behaviour online. However, i'm still concern about the issues of privacy and is my personal data being protected. What do you think about the future of IoT? will privacy still be the issue for everyone in 5 years time?

    1. I think I'm very much skeptical if in 5 years time privacy and security will not be an issue anymore. It will be an issue until organisations work focus on finding way to protect which i don't think they are.

  6. I think a bit of both that's why its hard to decide and i think that's why a lot of people event though they may be concerned about the lack of privacy, don't consider stopping using it. The fact that businesses can use data and technology to create better service , products, and even related to our health like with a pacemaker, it can also be scary as all our data are gathered and used without our authorization, we actually don't even know how company use them to the fullest and who they may sell it to but I don't think that it will stop, people rely on internet and businesses rely on big data to observe, acquire knowledge and shape their actions. I think if in the future government doesn't step in to regulate it and help protecting consumer privacy, more people are gonna be scared about it.
